U.S. estimated coal production rose week on week in the week ended June 27, the 26th week of 2026, data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed on July 2.

Estimated coal output stood at 9.77 million short tons (8.86 million tonnes) for the week, up 1.41% from the previous week but down 3.96% from the same period last year.

In Wyoming and Montana, estimated coal production reached 4.54 million short tons, up 1.96% from a week earlier and up 9.71% from a year ago.

Illinois output was estimated at 593,413 short tons, down 0.81% from the prior week and down 16.62% year on year. The Appalachian region produced an estimated 2.92 million short tons, up 1.02% from a week ago but down 10.62% from a year earlier.

Since the start of 2026, total estimated U.S. coal output stood at 253 million short tons, down 1.3% from 257 million short tons in the same period last year.

Rail coal loadings totaled 56,572 cars for the week, up 786 cars from the previous week but down 18 cars from a year earlier. Year-to-date rail coal loadings reached 1.45 million cars, down 0.6% from the same period last year.
