Indonesian state shipping company PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (PELNI) transported 335,415 tonnes of coal in the first hald of 2026, surging more than 505% from the same period a year earlier, the company's President Director Budi Setyawan Wijaya said in a statement on July 2.

The company transported the coal to several coal-fired power plants across Java, Sumatra, and Papua during the period.

The sharp increase reflects growing confidence among service users in PELNI's maritime logistics operations and strengthens the company's position as a strategic partner in national commodity distribution, according to Budi.

"In addition to providing passenger transportation, PELNI continues to develop logistics services as one of the pillars of the company's business," he said. "Through our commercial freight services, we are committed to providing safe, timely, and reliable logistics distribution to support the needs of various national strategic sectors, including energy supplies for power plants."

PELNI said it maintained consistent on-time delivery rates throughout the period while prioritizing a "safety first" and "zero accident" culture. The company is expanding logistics services as part of a broader business transformation aimed at supporting the distribution of strategic national commodities and ensuring energy security.

The state-owned firm said it remains optimistic that enhanced commercial freight services can help maintain supply chain flows, support national energy security and reinforce maritime transport as the backbone of logistics distribution in Indonesia.
