Energy supply trends in the European Union (EU) showed a shift toward cleaner sources in 2025, with the supply of renewables advancing 1.4% year on year to 3,194.44 TWh. The use of natural gas also grew, while coal contracted again to levels never seen before, according to preliminary Eurostat data released on June 29.

The EU's statistical office emphasizes that the supply of natural gas increased by 2.3% compared to 2024, thus marking its second consecutive year of expansion after the sharp decline recorded in 2023. Nuclear energy showed similar behavior, rebounding by 0.2%, in contrast to petroleum products, whose supply decreased by 2.8%.

In the case of coal, the downward trend intensified again during the last year, with a cut of 7.7% in lignite and 3.2% in hard coal. Both fossil fuels are thus at their lowest level since the start of the statistical series in 1990.

Regarding electricity generation, renewable energy sources maintained their leadership as the main source in the EU, contributing 47.2% of the total. However, electricity production with these technologies decreased by 0.5% due to the decline in hydroelectric generation.

At the same time, fossil fuels increased their contribution to electricity production by 3.2%, coming to represent 29.6% of the total generated in the EU, while nuclear energy accounted for the remaining 23.2%.
