Turkey climbed to ninth place worldwide for renewable energy supply in 2025, driven by a sharp surge in solar power generation, according to the latest Statistical Review of World Energy.
The report pegged Turkey's 2025 renewable energy supply at 1.03 exajoules (EJ). Solar power output jumped 44% year on year from 2024, lifting its share of national power generation above 10% and cementing its status as Turkey's fastest-expanding renewable segment.
Data from Turkey's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources shows installed renewable capacity hit 76.3 GW by end-2025. Solar capacity alone exceeded 25 GW, accounting for over one-fifth of the country's total power installed base.
Renewables emerged as the top contributor to global total energy supply growth in 2025, the first instance outside recessionary cycles, with solar responsible for 71% of this incremental expansion.
Global energy demand posted sustained growth through 2025: total energy supply (TES) rose 1.7%, marking the second straight year every major energy source notched an all-time record. Global solar generation surged 30%, while battery storage capacity expanded 66%, underscoring explosive uptake of clean energy technologies.
Electricity consumption outpaced broader energy demand, climbing 3% on the back of rising power loads from electric vehicles, data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
For the first time in history, all incremental global electricity demand was covered by low-carbon assets. Renewables and hydropower collectively overtook coal as the world's largest source of power generation, while aggregate fossil-fuel electricity output declined.
China led major economies in power demand growth at over 5%, adding annual consumption volume equivalent to Germany's entire yearly electricity use in a single year. Electricity demand in the U.S. rose 3%, matching the global average growth rate.
The review unveiled global data on data center power consumption for the first time, estimating worldwide demand at 788 TWh in 2025, with the U.S. accounting for 40% of this total.
Findings confirm the global energy transition is gathering momentum, though persistent demand growth keeps all primary energy sources in active use.
Nick Wayth, chief executive of the Energy Institute, said the dataset signals a watershed shift for the global energy system: low-carbon power has secured historic gains, yet carbon emissions continue to rise.
"The world is at a pivotal moment in its energy transition journey. While demand has reached historic highs, the accelerated deployment of renewables is beginning to reshape electricity systems at scale. Yet the pace of overall change remains uneven, and global emissions continue to rise," Wayth commented.
Andy Brown, president of the Energy Institute, noted energy security, affordability and sustainability remain core pillars shaping national energy policy frameworks, elevating the value of credible statistical data amid divergent national transition pathways.
Aditya Lolla, interim managing director at Ember, stressed renewable build-out is fueled equally by economic competitiveness and energy security imperatives, alongside climate policy targets.
"The energy transition is no longer driven solely by climate ambition. Increasingly, economics, industrial competitiveness, energy security and technological innovation are shaping the decisions countries make," Lolla stated.
