Indonesian thermal coal prices found fresh footing after Chinese buyers switched to the import market after rapid rise in Chinese domestic prices.
On September 15, October-loading Panamax 3,800 Kcal/kg NAR thermal coal was offered at $56/t FOB Kalimantan. Cargoes could only be obtained with prices of $54.5/t at least, said a Chinese importer. Supramax cargoes were quoted at $53/t FOB.
Chinese traders returned to the seaborne import market to cover their short positions after two weeks of quietness.
With pre-winter restocking on the horizon, importers expected remote possibility for prices, both at home and aboard, to fall again in the near term. Utilities also stepped up restocking, with the latest tender offer prices for 3,800 Kcal/kg NAR coal at 540 yuan/t, DDP with VAT, netting back to $58/t FOB on a Panamax basis.
Indonesian miners offered 5,200 Kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at $87/t FOB, according to a Beijing-based trader, compared with a deal he made at $82.5/t a few days ago.
Not only Indonesian but also Australian coal prices have increased significantly this week. Australian 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR thermal coal was traded at $95/t FOB on September 15, for October delivery.
Traders noted October-loading cargoes have been almost sold out in the market, due to active demand from Chinese buyers as well as India and other Asian buyers.
A Russian 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR coal was sold out at 900 yuan/t CFR Yangtze River ports. Currently Russian 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR coal was offered at $110/t CFR South China, against $109/t for Australian coal of this grade.
