Crude steel production in Japan reached 7.24 million tonnes in April, down 3.3% month on month and 3.1% year on year, the 16th month of year-on-year fall, according to data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Federation.
Japanese steelmakers reduced their production owing to tepid domestic demand and overseas price decline. Since last year, global shortage of chip and China's prevention and control of the epidemic have led to slower-than-expected recovery of automobile production.
In addition, Japan's steel producers were not willing to export, owing to weaker prices in overseas markets amid sluggish demand in China, said an analyst of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation.
The production of ordinary steel was 5.69 million tonnes, down 3.7% month on month and 1.6% year on year; that of special steel was 1.55 million tonnes, down 1.7% MoM and 8.1 % YoY.
In April, Japan's blast furnace steel production reached 5.27 million tonnes, down 4.6% MoM and 3.4% YoY; electric furnace steel production was 1.97 million tonnes, up 0.4% MoM yet down 2.4% YoY.
The production of hot rolled coils in Japan was 2.87 million tonnes in the same month, down 11.7% MoM and 4.8% YoY; H-beam steel production was 286,000 tonnes, down11.8% MoM and 4.4% YoY.
The production of pig iron was 5.19 million tonnes in April, down 3.2% MoM and 2.5% YoY.
In January-April 2023, Japan's cumulative crude steel production was 28.86 million tonnes, down 5.3% from the preceding year; production of pig iron was 20.86 million tonnes, a 5.5% fall YoY.
