China's coal-rich Shaanxi province supplied a record high of 17.98 million tonnes of coal to southwestern city of Chongqing in 2022, a 13.2% jump from 2021, according to Shaanxi Coal Transportation and Sales Group.
Since Shaanxi and Chongqin started energy cooperation, over 70 million tonnes of coal were shipped from Shaanxi to Chongqin, playing an import role in stabilizing coal market in the latter.
Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group, the largest coal producer in Shaanxi, has agreed to deliver 19 million tonnes of coal to Chongqing in 2023, said Chongqing Economy and Information Commission on January 6.
This includes 16.15 million tonnes of power coal, about 18.8% higher than the year-ago level, the commission said. The supply will meet 54% of demand of power plants in the city.
Chongqing suffered the unprecedented heat and drought in the summer of 2022. Subject to insufficient hydropower generation and mounted cooling demand, Chongqing had to impose power rationing and suspend industrial activities. Back then, Shaanxi Coal stood out and stepped up coal supply to Chongqing, with its shipments jumping 39.9% on the year in July and August.
