Leading Chinese consultant Fenwei has released the latest report on China's coal production capacity, analyzing capacity changes in 2022 and presenting forecast for the next five years up to 2027.
China's coal capacity expansion, according to the report, is forecast to slow down in the next five years after reaching peaks in 2021-22, when the world's largest coal consumer stepped up efforts to boost domestic supply in a move to reduce reliance on imports amid a more volatile global market.
In 2023-2027, the country's new coal capacity is projected to reach 503.18 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with thermal and coking coal at 415.35 Mtpa or 82.5% of total and 87.83 Mtpa or 17.5%, separately.
China added a total 301.06 Mtpa of coal production capacity in 2022, including 148.61 Mtpa of approved capacity for mine expansion and 152.45 Mtpa of newly-commissioned capacity, showed the report.
Specifically, newly-added thermal coal capacity reached 266.77 Mtpa or 88.61% of total, while new coking coal capacity was 34.29 Mtpa or 11.39%.
China increased its efforts to boost domestic coal production capacity to meet rising demand from power plants, against volatilities in the international market, especially after the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The conflict has led to shuffling of global coal trade pattern and higher fuel cost.
The new report provides a thorough analysis over China's coal supplying capacity (by region, coal type and mine status), by studying into China's various policies, e.g. approvals of advanced mine expansions, differentiated disposal of sub-0.3 Mtpa mines, and acceleration of mine constructions.
China's coal supplying capacity has been followed with great interest by industry participants. Fenwei, based on its exclusive coal mine capacity database, has been able to produce this comprehensive report that is more granularized in the datasets crucial for understanding of the Chinese coal market.
