A train carrying coal on the North Corridor line that runs to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal derailed near Ulundi in Kwazulu-Natal province, South Africa, on November 8, said South Africa's state-owned Transnet Freight Rail.
The train was delivering 60 wagons of export coal to the RBCT when the accident happened.
TFR said it will meet with community leaders and police in an effort to end disruptions to a key export railway line for coal and other minerals. The incident adds to concerning "threats and disruptions to its operations" in areas along the line.
Impact of the derailment on rail coal transport to RBCT and the port's stockpiles is hardly estimated as TFR didn't provide further details. As of November 7, RBCT's stocks totaled 3.2 million tonnes or so.
The threats to the North Corridor line follow less than a month after a wage strike that paralyzed South Africa's freight rail and port network, just as coal mining companies look to make the most of surging prices.
