Indian government aims to increase coal production to 1.23 billion tonnes by the fiscal year 2024-25 in order to ensure national energy security, according to the Ministry of Coal.
In support of this vision, the country's largest miner Coal India Limited (CIL) has adopted a comprehensive plan to strengthen the transport infrastructure to be able to absorb 1 billion tonnes of production and deliver coal to end-users.
Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of CIL, forecast its FY 2025 coal output to reach 135 million tonnes, including 85 million tonnes from several coal projects in the North Karanpura Coalfield, a major coalfield in Jharkhand with coal resources of approximately 19 billion tonnes.
Coal transportation from the North Karampura Coalfield is covered by the Barkakana-Daltonganj branch of the East Central Railway.
The Central Coalfields has constructed a new railway line, the 44.37-km Tori-Shivpur double-track railway line. In addition, the development and construction of a third line, Shivpur-Kathautia, is also underway and is expected to be commissioned by May 2023.
The Tori-Shivpur-Kathautia railway line is expected to have a coal transportation capacity of about 125 million tonnes and play a major role in phasing out road transport, the coal ministry said.
