China's thermal coal prices at main mining areas remained stable on August 4, as most miners saw balanced production and demand and a steady spot market.
Current concluded trades at mines were mainly based on some end buyers' limited basic demand, Sxcoal learned from miner sources. Power utilities were inactive in replenishing more cargoes amid high stocks, which drove railway stations and traders to halt purchases for thin profits.
Thermal coal prices in Ordos gradually regained steadiness amid rising purchase from Northeast China for civil usage. Heating plants in northeastern China have already started restocking for winter heating season that starts from September, in a bid to avert coal shortage in previous years.
But since power coal prices were heavily pressured, increased buys for heating may lend limited supports to thermal coal prices as a whole.
"We see not many coal trucks and all with on-demand orders," said one miner in Ordos. He was offering 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at 850 yuan/t, mine-mouth with VAT.
But coal shipment in Ejin Horo Banner of Ordos, one coal hub in Inner Mongolia, is expected to face hurdles in the near term as one man was tested positive for COVID virus.
Northern Shanxi saw a possible downtrend in prices today, as power utilities' demand was pretty low. "We see unsmooth shipment of power coal, and our stocks have reached the full level of 50,000 tonnes," said one miner in Yangquan.
The miner just cut offers for 6,200 Kcal/kg NAR lump coal by 300 yuan/t to 1,090 yuan/t, mine-mouth with VAT, and he offered 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR slack coal with 2% sulfur at 570 yuan/t.
Thermal coal prices in Yulin of Shaanxi continued climbing up on August 4, as some miners' production decreased due to safety inspections, and some even saw coal truck queues amid supply shortage.
"We don't have coal stocks for now as assigned volume for supply guarantee campaign is large. The market shows signs of another round of price increases," said one coal miner in Yulin.
One market source contacted by Sxcoal said he offered chemical coal (CV 6,000) 20 yuan/t higher to 1,020 yuan/t, mine-mouth with VAT, as local metallurgical and chemical plants raised coal purchases.
