Power use in China's top financial hub Shanghai is expected to reach 35 GW during the peak period in July-August, up 4.38% compared with the highest last summer, according to a power supply guideline issued by the municipal government on June 21.
Power demand in Shanghai will surge in next two months as persistent heat keeps air conditioners cranked up at homes and businesses. The maximum air conditioning demand this year is expected to top 14 GW in the city, representing more than 40% of the total.
The resource available over the peak period this summer is expected to reach 36.5 GW, with 1.5 GW to stand by, enough to cover the power use even if there is extreme weather.
The city promises no blackouts in any circumstances this summer. When there is a supply shortage, the city will restrict power consumption of energy-sizzling factories to ensure the use at homes and key business users.
