China plans to construct 450 GW of large-scale wind and solar power generation capacity in the deserts, as part of efforts to boost clean power generation and reduce carbon emissions.
Of the planned capacity, construction work of 85 GW has been kicked off. The preliminary work of a second batch of the project has already started, state media CCTV reported, citing an official meeting held on May 12, without giving the specific capacity to be built.
China has made important progress in the green and low-carbon energy transformation. The installed capacity of renewable energy had exceeded 1 TW, and that of hydropower, wind power, solar power and biomass power generation ranks first in the world. The proportion of clean energy consumption has increased from 14.5% to 25.5%.
However, as coal would be the "mainstay" of China's energy mix for the short term, the country has frequently strengthened to avoid a campaign-style reduction or a sudden brake on coal use.
The country will continue to improve the clean and efficient utilization of coal after it had achieved a remarkable result of raising the capacity of coal-fired power units with ultra-low emissions to 1 TW, according to the meeting.
All coal-fired power units with a coal consumption of more than 300g to produce 1KWh of electricity will be gradually upgraded.
