Coal-rich Colombia exported 50.2 million tonnes of thermal coal in 2021, rising over 6% year on year, showed data from shipping company Naves.
The country's thermal coal exports came in at 3.62 million tonnes in December last year, up 23.5% from a year ago.
The large rise in 2021 exports was mainly driven by increased export volume of major miners Cerrejon and Drummond.
Naves data showed thermal coal exports from Cerrejon jumped 76% from the year prior to 23.36 million tonnes, and Drummond exported 31.5 million tonnes of thermal coal in 2021, a year-on-year rise of 6%, the company's data showed.
Colombia exported the most thermal coal to Turkey, at 12.85 million tonnes, rising 7% from a year ago, while exports to Brazil ranked the second with 4.3 million tonnes, up 70%.
China bought 3.24 million tonnes of thermal coal from Colombia, surging 73.3% on the year.
In the full year of 2021, the country produced 54 million tonnes of coal, and it is expected to churn out 58.3-60.5 million tonnes of coal in 2022, up 8-12%.
