Vale S.A. produced 2.50 million tonnes of coal in the third quarter this year, thanks to mproved productivity of revamped plant, surging 78.1% from the same quarter of 2020 and 19.8% from the second quarter of 2021.
Thermal coal output was 1.43 million tonnes in the third quarter, more than doubling the year-ago volume and up 28.5% from the second quarter; coking coal output was 1.07 million tonnes, up 41.4% year on year and 9.1% from the second quarter.
Coal sales rose 91.2% on the year and 71% on the quarter to 2.64 million tonnes, resulting from improved operational performance and stronger demand of seaborne market.
Thermal coal sales surged 160.5% from the preceding year and 79.3% from the quarter before to 1.49 million tonnes, and coking coal sales rose 42.1% year on year and 61.3% quarter on quarter to 1.15 million tonnes.
The miner expected strong coal production and sales, but due to upcoming rainy season, the annual production rate of 15 Mtpa may not be reached until the end of the year.
