BHP's thermal coal output up 17% on yr in Jul-Sep

Global mining giant BHP Billiton produced 4.24 million tonnes of thermal coal during July-September, the first quarter for the fiscal year 2021-22, up 17% from the same period a year ago but down 6% from the previous quarter, the company said in its quarterly production reports on October 19.

All the thermal coal production during the first quarter came from New South Wales.

The company ascribed the year-on-year growth to higher mining volumes from its New South Wales thermal coal operations, driven by improved trucking capacity and an eased impact from rain.

Production from Colombian Cerrejon coal mine will no longer be included in BHP's thermal coal production targets after the company announced in June to divest its 33.3% interests in the mine. The Cerrejon divestment is expected to be completed in the second half of FY 2021-22.

BHP said its thermal coal production target for the FY 2021-22 (July 2021-June 2022) remains unchanged at 13-15 million tonnes.
