Whitehaven coal output down 4% in Jul-Sep on poor weather

Australian coal producer Whitehaven Coal Co., Ltd. posted a 4% decline in commercial coal production over the first quarter of FY2021-2022 (July-September) due to weather-related impacts on coal shipments from Narrabri mine, according to its quarterly report on October 14.

Over the period, the company produced 4.66 million tonnes of commercial coal, against 4.86 million tonnes in the same period of last year; raw coal production was 5.16 million tonnes, up 15% year on year, the report said.

"During recent weeks, thermal coal prices reached record highs which we will see reflected in significant cash generation over the coming months, Paul Flynn, Whitehaven chairman and CEO, said, adding strong demand, as well as continued tight supply, will keep coal prices lingering at high levels.

Whitehaven operates Narrabri mine in New South Wales and it owns 77.5% of its share. The coal mine had been affected significantly due to geological conditions and unplanned maintenance, dragging down the company's coal production.

"After a challenging period at Narrabri, we are readying for the longwall changeout ahead of a more productive second half," Flynn said.

The report showed Narrabri's raw coal production from July to September totaled 1.53 million tonnes, down 7% year on year; commercial coal output fell 16% to 1.36 million tonnes.

Whitehaven also holds a 75% stake in Maules Creek opencast mine, which produced 2.94 million tonnes of commercial coal over the reporting period, up 49% year on year; coal sales rose 11% to 2.44 million tonnes.

From July to September, Whitehaven's total coal sales were 4.65 million tonnes, down 23% on the year.

In the FY2020-21 that ended June, the company produced 20.56 million tonnes of raw coal, almost the same year on year; commercial coal production fell 7% to 16.92 million tonnes; coal sales dipped 1% to 19.8 million tonnes.
