Colombian coal producer Drummond's coal sales rose 10.1% year on year to 2.42 million tonnes in August, which however was down 8.8% from a month earlier, according to the company.
From January to August this year, the company's coal sales amounted to 21.8 million tonnes, up 9.6% from the same period last year, the company's data showed.
In August, Drummond exported the most coal to Turkey at 676,300 tonnes, down 25.7% year on year. A total of 5.07 million tonnes of coal were exported to Turkey from January to August, a 23.3% fall year on year.
The company's coal sales to South America increased noticeably in August. Drummond exported 437,000 tonnes of coal to Brazil, up 280% year on year and 76.6% month on month, taking the total volume to 2.8 million tonnes in the first eight months, which were 2.5 times of the level a year ago.
Drummond exported nearly 300,000 tonnes of coal to Chile, while there were no exports to the country in the same period last year. The volume nearly doubled exports in July. In January-August, the total exports were 2.38 million tonnes, an increase of 25.3% year on year.
In August, Drummond's coal exports to Northeast Asia dropped significantly. Coal exports to China dropped to zero, although aggregate exports were 2.2 million tonnes in the previous eight months, a 69.2% year-on-year jump. Coal exports to South Korea were nearly 300,000 tonnes, a 73% increase.
In August, Drummond's coal production was 2.14 million tonnes, down 10.8% year on year, the data showed. The drop in production was mainly affected by stormy and rainy weather.
From January to August, Drummond produced 19.7 million tonnes of coal. The company's coal production for 2021 is expected at 31.5-33 million tonnes.
