Coal India Ltd's coal production fell for two consecutive fiscal years ending in March 2021, according to an announcement released by the company on April 1.
Impacted by sluggish power demand owing to Covid-19 lockdowns, the company's coal production decreased 1% year on year from 602.1 million tonnes to 596.2 million tonnes.
The company sold 573.8 million tonnes of coal, down 1.3% from the previous year.
"The sales drop was mainly due to coal supply reduction to coal-fired plants," stated the company.
The sale reduction led to increased stockpile by 25% year on year to 99 million tonnes by the end of March.
"With the demand recovery during summer, the company has sufficient buffer to meet any surge and the stocks would be reduced substantially," the company said.
