Eastern China's Anhui province saw a rise of 5.5% in electricity consumption in 2020, driven by the demand of winter household heating and post-pandemic economic recovery.
In 2020, Anhui's power consumption totaled 242.75 TWh, showed data from an institute under the State Grid. Anhui's provincial power grid saw its maximum power load reach 45.83 GW last year, up 6.7% year on year.
Affected by the pandemic early last year, the power consumption in the first quarter declined 7.3%, falling for the first time since 2000, but as industrial activities were gradually restored, the growth turned from negative to positive in the first half, and then increased by 2.7% in the third quarter and finally 5.5% for the whole year.
Anhui was ranked eighth in all provinces of China in terms of the growth of power consumption in the first 11 months, leading in the Yangtze River Delta.
In 2020, power consumption in the primary industry –mainly the agriculture sector – increased 13.8%, in the secondary industry – mainly the industrial sector – rose 6.2% and tertiary industry – mainly service sector, 4.9%.
