Shanxi has closed 19 coking plants so far this year, involving 10.79 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of outdated coking capacity, local media reported.
In addision, 11 coke producers have stopped coal feeding at coke ovens with capacity of 6.5 Mtpa, Shanxi Evening News reported.
Shanxi has been working to eliminate excess capacity in the coking industry, and restructure and upgrade the industry to combat pollution. In 2019, the province had already shut down 11.92 Mtpa of coking capacity.
The capacity of coke ovens with chamber height above 5.5 meters accounted for 38% of Shanxi's total by the end of 2019, up from a share of only 25.5% at the end of 2017. By the end of this year, it is expected to reach 50%.
