Russia's Industry and Energy Ministry plans to reduce December coal export quotas from Kuzbass to Far Eastern ports and China-Russia railway border crossings, and quotas from Kemerovo to Far Eastern region will be lowered by 900,000 tonnes from November to 3.8 million tonnes.
Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK) will see its December quotas in Kuzbass down 21.5% from November. Quotas for major coal miners like Raspadskaya, SDS-Ugol, Kuzbasskaya Toplivnaya and Stroyservice will also be cut.
Sources said China now has put a cap on Australian coal imports, and showed a growing demand for Russian coal. The approaching quota cut is destined to hinder Russian traders' sales growth in China.
Russia exported 22.17 million tonnes of coal in September, up 6.78% on the year and 18.7% on the month, hitting a 1-1/2-year high since April, 2019, according to the Federation Customs Service of Russia.
However, the country's exports to China fell 4.64% from August to 3.93 million tonnes, which increased by 38.03% year on year.
