Xilingol in Inner Mongolia has quickened approval procedures for production of an opencast coal mine, in a bid to further ensure stable coal supplies to northeastern provinces for heating demand in this winter and next spring.
Northeastern provinces including Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces are prone to coal shortage in winter due to long distance from major coal bases and long span of cold days, and depend heavily on coal supplies from neighboring Inner Mongolia.
The coal mine, located in Jilingol mining area, has gained a series of approvals from relevant authorities since this month, and was officially put into production on October 10.
Construction of the coal mine project was given the green light by the National Development and Reform Commission in 2013, with approved capacity at 18 million tonnes per annum.
