Cerrejon, one of Colombia's large coal exporters, forecast its coal exports in 2020 to drop around 21% year on year to 20.5 million tonnes, it said on July 27.
It was lowered from original export target of 26 million tonnes due to negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, while its previous coal production goal was also 26 million tonnes, according to Claudia Bejarano, the company's chief executive.
As of July 28, total confirmed cases of the coronavirus reached 267,000 in Colombia, with newly-infected cases in a single day breaking 10,000. Bejarano said strike action by the main worker unions will also impact coal production.
Cerrejon is the largest thermal coal mine in Colombia, and mainly targets European market. Its coal exports were 26.3 million and 30.4 million tonnes in 2019 and 2018, respectively.
