Shandong's coal consumption of industrial enterprises above designated size fell by 12.9% year on year in the first half of 2020, official data showed.
The data refers to industrial enterprises with annual main business income above 20 million yuan ($2.86 million).
The total coal consumption shall be controlled within 368.34 million tonnes by 2020, proposed by the "Work Plan on Cutting Coal Consumption in Shandong Province in 2018-2020".
Coal accounted for 74.5% in primary energy mix in Shandong as of 2018, 15 percentage points higher than the national average level, data showed.
The coal-dominated consumption mix is difficult to change, as traditional industries take as high as 70% in the region, and its thermal power installed capacity and generation rank first in China.
In addition, coal consumption is unbalanced and distributed among different parts of the province, with the relatively less-developed northern, central and southern regions more dependent on coal.
The net reduction of coal consumption will reach 37 million tonnes by the end of 2020 based on the total consumption scale in 2018, equal to cutting coal consumption by around 10%, according to Shandong's official documents published since July, 2019.
