China will have more than 30 new ultra high-voltage (UHV) power transmission lines approved by 2025, driving 587 billion yuan of investment into the industry, according to a report issued on June 2.

According to the white paper on UHV industry development and investment opportunities, issued by CCID Consulting Co., Ltd. and Sina 5G, these projects will breed a batch of UHV-related enterprises in the western region and advance industry agglomeration, making the industry a hot zone of investment and development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025).

The "14th Five-Year Plan" period is an important stage to strengthen power transmission from west to east, increase the share of clean energy, and consolidate energy security, the report said.

During the period, the northwestern province of Xinjiang will build eight UHV transmission lines delivering power outside, and Sichuan, a southwestern province boasting hydropower, will double the volume of hydropower outbound delivery.

China will approve and start constructing seven UHV projects this year, with a total investment of 91.9 billion yuan, a rise of 66.18% year on year, in which the scale of UHV DC and AC transmission line core equipment accounted for 24.6% and 22.1%, respectively.

UHV DC core equipment includes converter valves, converter transformers, DC protection systems and GIS combined electrical equipment. UHV AC core equipment includes 1000kV UHV transformers and reactors.

In 2018, China approved and started five key UHV projects with an investment scale of 65.8 billion yuan; in 2019, another two key UHV projects gained approval and started construction, with an investment of 55.3 billion.

By 2022, China will complete the expansion of more than a dozen UHV substations in Anhui and Shanxi provinces. A total of 10 UHV lines are expected to get approval, bringing the industry into 41.4 billion yuan of investment.
