N Queensland Oct coal exports rebound after 3-mth decline
North Queensland in Australia witnessed its coal exports rebound in October following declines for three consecutive months, according to data from the North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation.
Coal exports, mainly through Hay Point, Dalrymple Bay and Abbot Point, presented a month-on-month rise of 4.14% to 12.37 million tonnes in October, a fresh growth after declines in the previous three months, data showed.
S Africa Sep thermal coal exports up 9.65% MoM
South Africa saw thermal coal exports further recovered by 9.65% month-on-month in September, showed the latest customs data, as shipments to Pakistan and Sri Lanka surged.
The country's thermal coal exports came in at 6.07 million tonnes in September, which was still 13.05% lower from a year ago.
Indonesian low-CV prices further slide with sluggish demand in China
Indonesian low-calorific value (CV) thermal coal prices continued falling as most Chinese buyers were cautious to take positions amid intensified import restrictions.
Supramax cargo of 3,800 Kcal/kg NAR thermal coal was offered at $34-34.5/t FOB, traders reported, a $1-1.5/t drop from a week earlier; Panamax cargoes were seen with a $0.5/t premium at $35/t or so.
Central China firm signs $2 bln thermal coal contract with Indonesian miner
Xingrui Industry Co., Ltd, a state-controlled enterprise based in Zhengzhou city of Henan province, signed thermal coal term contract worth $2 billion with Indonesian miner PT Indika Energy Tbk at a conference in Shanghai on November 6.
The agreement, reached at the second China International Import Expo in Shanghai, involves 4.5 million tonnes of thermal coal to be supplied by PT Indika Energy in 2020, totaling $2 billion.
Tightening China import grips dampen overseas thermal coal prices
A number of customs offices have halted clearance services for coal imports this week since the General Administration of Customs allegedly required to tighten grips on the overseas fuel, hurting prices of thermal coal in the Chinese seaborne import market.
Two Chinese customs of Fuzhou and Guangzhou suspended coal import clearance from October 25 after their 2019 import quotas were used up, market sources said last week.
Coal imports at key Indian state-owned ports fall to 2-yr low in Oct
Coal imports at India's 12 major state-owned ports in October fell to two-year low since August 2017, data showed from Indian Ports Association, along with rising domestic production and slow economic growth.
These ports imported 10.37 million tonnes of coal on aggregate, down 30.24% from the same month last year and 1.34% from a month ago.
South32 exits thermal coal with sale to Seriti Resources
South32, the group spun out of BHP, has reached an agreement to sell its South African thermal coal business to Seriti Resources, becoming the latest miner to ditch the unloved fossil fuel.
Under the deal, South32 will receive an upfront payment of $6.75 million and 49% of the cash generated by the business, which is called South Africa Energy Coal (SAEC), until 2024.
Australia's Gladstone port Oct coal exports to China rebound from 3-1/2-yr low
Coal exports from Australia's Gladstone port to China rebounded with a month-on-month jump of 2.95 times from September's 3-1/2 year low in October, according to data from Gladstone Ports Corporation.
In October, Gladstone port shipped 471,800 tonnes of coal to China, falling 51.51% from the preceding year, data showed.
Indonesia's Nov HBA reference price recovers from 3-yr low at $66.27/t
Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has set its November thermal coal reference price, also known as Harga Batubara Acuan or HBA, at $66.27/t, recovering from a 3-year-low reached in October since September 2016.
The HBA price was set $64.8/t in October and $97.9/t for November 2018.
Newcastle Oct coal exports to China surge 19.47% YoY
Coal exports from Carrington and Kooragang, two key terminals at Newcastle port, Australia to China expanded by 19.47% year on year in October, showed data from the Port Waratah Coal Services, operator of the two terminals.
October shipments to China came in at 1.58 million tonnes, accounting for 15.8% of the total exports of the two terminals and up 38.57% from the month-ago level.
Coal India Oct output drops 20.9% YoY to 39.35 mln T
State-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) reported a 20.9% drop on in coal production at 39.35 million tonnes in October, as against 49.78 million tonnes in the same period last year, showed provisional data of the miner on November 1.
During the first seven month of the ongoing fiscal (April-October 2019), CIL's coal output totaled 280.36 million tonnes, dropping 8.5% from 306.24 million tonnes produced last year.
S.Korea to close 6 older coal-fired power plants by 2021, from planned 2022
South Korea's six older coal-fired power plants will be retired by 2021, a year earlier than previously planned, as part of the country's ongoing efforts to curb air pollution, the prime minister's office said on November 1.
South Korea, Asia's fourth-largest economy, runs some 60 coal-fired power plants, generating around 40% of the country's electricity, but coal has been blamed for worsening air quality in the country.
