Chinese import thermal coal prices face downward pressure

Chinese import thermal coal prices are facing downward pressure, as end buyers slowed purchases amid a weaker price advantage held by import cargoes against domestic supplies.


Australian November-delivered 5,500 Kcal/kg NAR coal on October 24 was mainly offered at $53-53.5/t FOB Newcastle, while bidding indications focused on below $53/t, according to traders.


Anglo American adjusts down thermal coal guidance

Diversified miner Anglo American tightened its full-year guidance of thermal coal production following a fall in the third quarter output of Cerrejón, a joint venture in Colombia.


The company announced on October 22 to lower its target to 26 million tonnes from previous forecast of 26-28 million tonnes. All production here said is based on its interest holding portion.


Indian power utilities' Sep thermal coal imports down 0.47% MoM

Indian power utilities' thermal coal imports inched down by 0.47% month on month in September, after a slight rebound in August from a 3-month decline, according to data from India Central Electricity Authority (CEA).


Those utilities imported 5.23 million tonnes of thermal coal in September, increasing 7.33% from the previous year, data showed.


Bounty Mining's Cook Colliery restarts operation after roof fall

Australian Bounty Mining Limited announced on October 24 that its Cook Colliery in the State of Queensland resumed coal production by using another CM (CM02).


Cook Colliery, located about 20 km to the south of Blackwater, is an underground colliery in the Bowen Basin with the maximum production capacity of 2.2Mtpa for raw coal. And the coal mine was focused on MV hard coking coal and premium thermal coal production.


The Russians are coming for Asia and Europe's coal markets

Life is set to get even more difficult for major coal exporters with Russia planning to increase shipments of the fuel and the cost advantages appearing increasingly stacked in its favor.


Russia is already the third-largest supplier to the seaborne market, behind Indonesia and Australia, and is moving to take advantage of its central geographic position to boost exports to both the Atlantic and Pacific basins.


Russia Aug coal exports up 31.5% MoM; shipments to China up for 3rd mth

Russia saw its coal exports increase significantly in August from a six-month low a month earlier, showed data from the Federal Customs Service of Russia.


The country exported a total 20.1 million tonnes of coal in August, surging 31.49% from 15.29 million tonnes in July, yet sliding 1% from 20.31 million tonnes a year ago.


Japan Sep coal imports down 2.8% YoY, preliminary data

Japan's coal imports stood at 14.89 million tonnes in September, retreating 2.8% from a year ago, showed the preliminary data from Minister of Finance of Japan.


Total coal imports in September valued 187.99 billion yen/t ($1.7 billion/t), down 19.8% from the year prior. This translated to an average import price of 12,625 yen/t.


Mongolia Sep coal exports retreat from a one-yr high

Mongolian coal exports retreated in September from a one-year high of 4.13 million tonnes a month earlier, showed data from the Mongolia National Statistics Office, partly due to reduced shipments to China.


The country exported 3.71 million tonnes of coal to its main destinations last month, decreasing 9.95% from August, partly impacted by a fallback of deliveries to China as trucks available decreased amid transport permit expiration and Ganqimaodu authorities halved import quotas for enterprises.


Thailand Sep thermal coal imports down 10.3% MoM

Thailand's thermal coal imports (including bituminous and sub-bituminous coal) reduced by 10.31% from a month earlier and 1.17% from a year ago to 1.97 million tonnes in September, according to the latest customs data.


Imports of bituminous coal saw improvement while that of sub-bituminous coal posted a notable reduction.


S. Africa's Richards Bay Aug coal exports up 9.87% MoM

Coal exports from South Africa's Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) increased 9.87% in August from a six-month low of 5.01 million tonnes in July, customs data showed.


RBCT exported 5.51 million tonnes of coal in August, falling by 13.05% from the same period last year, according to the data.  


S Africa Aug thermal coal exports recover from a half-yr low

South Africa saw thermal coal exports recover from a half-year low in August this year, showed local customs data, boosted mainly by surged shipments to South Korea.


The country's thermal coal exports came in at 5.54 million tonnes in August, marking a strong pickup of 12.15% from a six-month low in July. It was down 16.02% year on year.


Inner Mongolia Ceke Sep coal imports up 3.83% MoM

Ceke border crossing in northern China's Inner Mongolia posted a 3.83% month-on-month increase in coal imports in September, according to official data.


The growth was much slower compared with a 49.93% increase pegged in August.


Indonesia Aug coal exports down 8.38% MoM

Indonesia saw its coal exports reduced 8.38% from a year ago to 35.76 million tonnes in September, according to the BPS-Statistics Indonesia.


The volume was still 9.96% higher than 32.52 million tonnes a year ago.
