Coal-rich Shanxi province publicized the first batch of coal-fired power plants to be shut in 2017, totaling 840 MW, said an official notice.
The move, involving five power companies, is expected to pick up pace of upgrading and transformation in power sector, contribute to reduce pollutants emissions and optimize power generation mix, said the notice.
The province will order operation halts for those coal-fired power units with capacity below 300 MW and failing to meet the province's ultra-low emission standard before January 1 of 2018.
Complete closures will be enforced in 2018 for those units without rectification possibilities or failing to meet energy consumption, environmental protection, quality and safety standards, said the notice.
The dismantlement and acceptance work will be finished by end-December this year.
